History and Activities
Nea karvali of Kavala, is the continuity of the
old Kappadocian Karvali (Gelveri). Its glorious
course through the ages was marked from the presence
of her Holy child, St Gregorios Theologos, one
of the greatest fathers of the Christian Church.
Since 1981 this course was affected, beyond agricultural
and industrial development, the foundation of
Stegi Politismou of Nea Karvali, which consists
the continuity of the first educational organization
"Nazianzos" founded in Konstantinople
in 1884.Stegi Politismou contributed the most
with acts and institutions in its 20 year old
history.
It has one of the largest and finest traditional
dance groups, with more
than 170 dancers, all lovers of the Greek tradition,
awarded with golden medals and first prizes in
Greece and abroad.
It founded one of the greatest international institutions
of our country, the International Folklore Festival
"SUN & STONE".
Up today more than 70 countries from all over
the planet have participated in this festival.
It organized a worship in Kappadocia and operated
a church after 70 years.
It also has a library, and a department of education
of traditional arts ( carpet weaving, pottery)
and it successfully runs the blood bank of Nea
Karvali.
It owns a great collection of authentic traditional
costumes from all over Greece, which are about
to be exhibited at the "Museum of Fabric".
This Museum is now at the construction stadium.
It also has the "Museum of the Sea"
which contains a collection of more than 5.000
shells from the seas of our planet.
The third Museum is the
Historical and Ethnological Museum of the
Greek-kappadocian Civilization. The museum was
awarded from the European Committee with the special
commendation 1997 of the European Museum of the
Year Award.
In 1995 it founded the
Centre for Kappadocian Studies.The C.K.S.
is promoting the Greek-kappadocian tradition to
all over the world.C.K.S. and the
Historic Archive of Kappadocia, collects all
the elements ( objects, documents, photographs,
interviews), that consist the life of Greeks in
Kappadocia.
It build a traditional stone village called "Acontisma"
, which has the means to offer great hospitality,
conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events.
